Measurement Act

According to the Measurement Act that came into effect on November 1, 1993, Force, Moment of Force, Pressure, and Stress cannot be used for transactions or certifications other than those based on the SI unit system (International System of Units) in Table 1 as legal measurement units.

Under the current Measurement Act, the use of newton (N) as a unit of force is mandatory in Japan. Measuring instruments with a scale other than the legal measurement units for expressing the conditions shown in Table 1 must not be sold or displayed for sale in Japan for the purpose of use in Japan.

This explains why IMADA sells products with legal unit scales to Japan.

Moment of force N・m Newton meter
Pressure Pa, N/m2, bar Pascal, Newton per square meter, and Bar
Stress Pa, N/m2 Pascal, Newton per square meter
Viscosity Pa・s, N・s/m2 Pascal second, Newton second per square meter

*The conversion with conventional units of force is 1 kgf = 9.80665 N.

Prefixes

When expressing length, we state kilometers (km), centimeters (cm), millimeters (mm), and so on. These k (kilometer), c (centimeter), and m (millimeter) are called "prefixes" in the SI System of Units (International System of Units) and are added before SI units denoted by a single symbol to create SI units of decimal multiples or quantities. There are a total of 20 prefixes. The most commonly seen of these prefixes are listed in the table below.

Table 2 Relationship between prefixes and units

Symbol SI prefix Scientific notation
N nano 10-9
μ micro 10-6
m milli 10-3
c centi 10-2
da deca 10
k kilo 103
M Mega 106
G Giga 109

For Example 1N = 100cN = 0.1daN
100kgf ≒ 1000N = 1kN = 100daN
1N・m = 100N・cm = 100cN・m
